The National lights up the DAR
The Holdup brought the energy for roughly two hours Sunday to a well-packed house of 20- and 30-somethings, despite a Sunday night slot and playing to a weekend-worn crowd. Great venue for a good band!
Revisiting Karen, Secret Meeting, and All The Wine from Alligator were well welcomed, and the fan favorite Fake Empire rocked to close the first, and only set. They showcased quite a few new ones from High Violet after opening with a new track, Runaway. Anyone's Ghost and Terrible Love were exceptional.
Mike Berninger belting out Squalor Victoria was worth every penny, while some intimacy was lost in the space, for example in Daughters of the Soho Riots. By adding another guitar and two horns, they filled the place right up. A longtime fan, I was interested to see how they would perform in a larger venue having only seen them before in smaller environments, i.e. Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia; I was not disappointed.
